As AI and robotics have increasingly reshaped industries and societies, the VinFuture Prize is committed to recognizing pioneers who have driven this technological revolution. After the 2024 Grand Prize honored five scientists for their contributions to advancing deep learning, the Prize Council has now welcomed Professor Daniela Rus, Director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT, as its newest member. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prof. Rus reflects on her journey in a field long perceived as male-dominated and shares how AI plays an important role in shaping the future of robotics.
A leading force in cholera vaccine research, Dr. Firdausi Qadri at the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research (icddr,b) has dedicated her career to combating this dramatic mortal disease through the innovative improvement of oral cholera vaccination, aiming to large-scale vaccination effort in developing countries. Upon receiving the 2024 VinFuture Special Prize, valued at $500,000, Dr. Qadri generously committed the entire award to expanding ideSHi—the Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives in Bangladesh.
The rise of powerful AI like DeepSeek is transforming the world at an unprecedented pace, sparking enthusiasm and deep concerns about its potential risks. On that subject, “AI godfather” Yoshua Bengio (Université de Montréal and Mila - Quebec AI Institute) highlighted the urgent need for national and global efforts to regulate AI and ensure equitable benefits for all.
“Most of the major scientific prizes are traditionally given in developed economies. Therefore, it is significant that a big prize such as the VinFuture Prize is now given in Vietnam, an emerging economy. This demonstrates to the world that emerging economies can be equal partners in the innovation game.”
